A curtain is drawn, but it is unclear whether anything has begun.

In Raphael Egil’s Stage and Talking (2026), two monumental paintings assemble the familiar elements of the theater: a dark curtain, a stage, flowers, and, in Talking, a solitary figure. Both a mirror and a model of social life, the theater gives form to the relationships between private experience, collective memory, public sentiment, and systems of power. Egil enters this inherited space only to loosen its coordinates. The setting is recognizable; the performance remains suspended.

Throughout Noon Performance, figures sit, fall, gesture, compete, or appear to perform, yet their roles remain unclear. Without a fixed before or after, their actions never settle into a single narrative. The paintings offer neither origin nor consequence, leaving the viewer to direct the unfolding action.

The chessboard offers another contained stage. Each piece occupies a prescribed role and every move answers to an established set of rules, yet the course of the game remains vulnerable to surprise, error, hope, and the brilliant move capable of overturning its entire order.

Egil’s recurring jockey holds together competition and vulnerability, honor and risk, beauty and death. When the horse disappears, the jockey remains suspended in a posture whose purpose is no longer clear.

Whether working in monumental tempera or small, immediate oils, Egil retains the directness of a sketch. In both, gesture precedes explanation, setting an action in motion without determining where it leads. Across Noon Performance, the structures remain in place, while what unfolds within them slips beyond their design.
